- Do you need to worry about ozone?
- What is ozone gas anyway?
- Do you need a fan in ionic air purifiers?
The technology that ionic air purifiers use is really no mystery. Who hasn't fooled around with static electricity before, by doing things like rubbing their feet on a carpet or a balloon on their head. Particles in the air simply receive a charge, then are attracted to metal plates that have an opposite charge.
Fan or No Fan? - That is the Question
Understand this though. That unless an ionic air purifier has a fan in it, it just won't move a heck of a lot of air. Yes, there will be some air movement, as a result of the ionic effect on air molecules passing through the machine but nowhere near what a fan can produce. Ionic air purifiers with fans tend to be noisy. However, the fans are useful in moving the particles to places where cleaning them is possible. Ionic air purifiers without fans rely on the movement around the room to carry the particles to areas of the room that make them easier to be cleaned. If you prefer this form of ionic air purifier, make sure to place it at the appropriate area.
What About Ozone and Ionic Air Purifiers?
Ionic air purifiers that produce ozone as a byproduct have also been the source of a lot of news in recent years. In spite of its odd sounding name, ozone is not some sort of poisonous gas. It's merely three oxygen atoms that have joined together to form one molecule called an ozone molecule. This molecule easily attracts particles in the air such as pollen, dust, bacteria, and smoke. Once these particles combine, the combination becomes heftier and settles in an area of the room that makes it easier to clean. This whole process cleans the air around you.

It's Probably Nothing You Have to Worry About
Ozone is a powerful oxidant and it is directly responsible for the odor killing effects of ionic air purifiers. It has a unique and fresh smell that helps reduce and kill bad odors in the air. However, because it is such a powerful oxidant, it can cause irritation in the lining of respiratory passages, particularly in people with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or bronchitis. Exposing yourself to ozone particles for a long period of time is definitely something that you should avoid. To continue using the ionic air purifier without posing health risks, make sure to purchase a purifier that gives off less than 50 parts per billion of ozone particles.
Why All the Hype About Ozone?
Smaller air purifiers shouldn't be a problem though. Even so, it's small animals and plants that are the most at risk from increased ozone levels. Be aware that much of the hype concerning ozone and ionic air purifiers is just that hype. It's promoted by makers of non ozone producing units.
